Emergency exercises

For many years it has been a requirement that nuclear licensed sites hold regular exercises, some of which are demonstration exercises that are assessed by the Nuclear Installations Inspectorate. These test the response to an incident. There are three levels of demonstration exercise:

Level 1

These exercises demonstrate Magnox South’s emergency arrangements on and off site. They usually involve the emergency services. They are held annually at each licensed site.

Level 2

These are designed to test the wider multi-agency response off-site. They must be held every three years for each licensed site.

Level 3

This is a national level exercise and is held annually at a chosen site. As well as testing the off-site arrangements it includes several government departments and their agencies.

RADSAFE

In addition, Radsafe exercises, regulated by the Department for Transport, test the transportation of nuclear material by road and rail.
