The plan
A response would immediately take effect, comprising:
- the control of the incident at the site
- the assessment of the consequences arising from the incident and alerting the relevant authorities
- the introduction of countermeasures to minimise short and longer-term effects
- the return to normal conditions
We’re prepared and ready to deal with not one, but two zones around the nuclear plant in question. The first one was set by considering the scale of accident that is considered to be reasonably foreseeable, although some of the shutdown sites still use the distance set when they operated. This is called the Detailed Emergency Planning Zone (DEPZ). The second one – called the extendibility zone - goes beyond the first zone. We have outline plans to protect the public in this area in the very unlikely event of a severe accident.
As the management and operations contractors and holders of the Nuclear Site Licence, it is our responsibility to bring any incident under control and also to minimise any off-site effects. We provide guidance and countermeasure advice to the relevant agencies to protect the public and the environment.
Community calendars
People living within the DEPZ receive annual advice on how to protect themselves and their families in the event of an emergency. This is given out in the form of calendars. Click on your local site to view the calendar information:
