Site history

As a Magnox reactor, Berkeley was one of the first generation of nuclear reactors in Britain - the type that first produced commercial electricity in the UK.

Berkeley came into service in 1962 with two natural uranium-fuelled Magnox reactors. The two reactors supplied four turbo generators with a total of 276 megawatts of electricity until Reactor 2 was shutdown in October 1988 followed by Reactor 1 in March 1989.

1989-1996:Nuclear Electric plc (following the part privatisation of the CEGB)

1996-1998:Magnox Electric plc (following the transfer of the AGR and PWR nuclear power stations to British Energy plc)

1998-2004:British Nuclear Fuels plc

2004 to date:The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (following the restructuring of the UK nuclear industry and transfer of all UK nuclear legacy to the NDA)
