Site history

Construction of Hinkley Point A began in 1957 and the station began generating electricity seven years later in 1965. It was one of eleven Magnox nuclear power stations commissioned in the United Kingdom between 1956 and 1971. The station closed in 2000 and a programme of defuelling and decommissioning the twin reactor station began.

The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (following the restructuring of the UK nuclear industry and transfer of all UK nuclear legacy to the NDA)
