Socio-economic support
Background
The Energy Act 2004 outlines an obligation for the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) to consider the socio-economic impacts of its activities on local communities.
The NDA’s approach to tackling these obligations was set out in its strategy, published on 30 March 2006. To support its approach, in 2008, the NDA published an approved socio-economic policy.
Our approach
Under the management and operations contract with the NDA, Site Licence Companies (SLCs) must give support to activities which benefit the social and economic life of communities living near each of its sites, or that produce other environmental benefits for such communities. The NDA allocates funding for use by the contractor for such purposes.
Magnox South has a single process for capturing, assessing and awarding requests for socio-economic support from organisations near any one of its five sites.
Socio-economic plan
The scheme for 2010/11 financial year is now open.
A plan which details how spending decisions will be reached in 2010/11 has been published and is available as an attachment on this webpage alongside the application form.
The plan explains how Magnox South will ensure funding requests and subsequent decisions are treated in accordance with the NDA’s published guidelines.
It explains how funding can be applied for, defines a system for processing applications — including who will be involved — and outlines the criteria that will be applied to decisions that are made.
