Berkeley shares best practice

Personnel from the Winfrith Site, which is part of the Research Sites Restoration Ltd (RSRL) Site License Company (SLC) visited the Berkeley Site recently.  The visit was organised to allow the sharing of decommissioning best practice between the two sites and across SLC's.  Both sites are in similar stages of decommissioning.  The group were particularly interested in the Berkeley reactors, which are currently being prepared to enter their safestore mode and the care and maintenance phase of their lifetimes.  Presentations were also given on the plans for the management of Berkeley's Intermediate Level Waste.

Hinkley decontaminates final skip

Hinkley Point A has achieved a major milestone in its decommissioning programme by decontaminating the last of its huge inventory of nearly 1,800 skips – the largest inventory across the Magnox estate.

Sizewell decommissioning generates cash for charity

Decommissioning activities at Sizewell have resulted in a donation of £500 to the East Anglian Air Ambulance. The money has come from the sale of redundant laboratory equipment which was offered to neighbouring site, Sizewell B, for use in its training facility.

Drilling down at Berkeley

Preparations for Berkeley’s intermediate level waste interim storage facility are progressing, with a £150,000 project to undertake test piling at the site. It follows landscaping work, completed in 2008, where a metre thick engineered infill was laid, providing a foundation base for a test piling rig.
