Hinkley's new trans-frontier shipment

The Environment Agency (EA) has recently approved an application for Hinkley’s second trans-frontier shipment authorisation. This will allow the continuation of a metal melt process, with up to 400 tonnes of low level waste (LLW) metal authorised to be shipped to the US for smelting and re-use within the nuclear industry.

Local primary school gets playing!

St. Nicholas Primary School in Tillingham were delighted to receive a donation from Magnox South owner, EnergySolutions, towards some new play equipment in the playground. The money started off a fundraising campaign to buy some ‘Snug’ play apparatus which is adaptable, safe, creative and promotes active play among the pupils.

Bradwell Village Hall gets a facelift

Magnox South owner, EnergySolutions, have donated £2,000 towards the refurbishment project at Bradwell Village Hall as part of the Magnox South sponsorship scheme. Following a donation the previous year from Bradwell Site owner, the NDA, the team working on the project successfully refurbished the upper level of the hall including the committee room, stage, toilets and storage. As part of the project an accessible toilet and veranda were installed which can now be accessed via a wheelchair ramp.

David Drew MP for Stroud District visited the Berkeley Site today to meet the Site Director, Jim Crocker and undertake a familiarisation tour. David was given the chance to see decommissioning work taking place first hand and meet staff and contractors at the site. We thank David for his continued support for Berkeley Site.

College planners visit Hinkley

A group of engineers from Bridgwater College visited Hinkley this month to view the Deplant Mockup Simulator. The simulator was built in the deplanted turbine hall last year to support the retraining of Magnox South staff for decommissioning roles.

Berkeley Site celebrates yet more success at the recent RoSPA Awards

This year RoSPA presented Berkeley Site with another prestigious Presidents Award. This is the site’s 14th consecutive award and was presented for an outstanding performance in health and safety at work. In deciding which award is appropriate, RoSPA looks at various site performance indicators. These include measures of occupational health, safety management systems and culture. RoSPA also look for consistent application of risk control measures, actions to reduce events and injuries and the number of days lost due to accident and ill health.

EnergySolutions Chief Operations Officer visits Berkeley Site

Alan Parker, EnergySolutions Chief Operations Officer, visited the Berkeley Site today to meet the Site Director, Jim Crocker and undertake a familiarisation tour. EnergySolutions is the current Parent Body Organisation (PBO) for Magnox South and Alan will be visiting other Magnox sites in both Magnox North and Magnox South. The comprehensive tour was given to show just how much decommissioning work has already been safely undertaken at the Berkeley Site since the site stopped generating electricity in 1989.

Magnox Electric graduates raised more than £3,000 for the Royal National Lifeboat Institute (RNLI) after climbing 7052 metres – over three quarters the height of Mount Everest – at a special event in Bristol on Saturday.

Part of Bridgwater College, near Hinkley Point which houses the Magnox South Decommissioning Skills Centre at Cannington, was the location for a special event recently, when the chairman and chief executive of EnergySolutions, Steve Creamer, flew in from America to present certificates to the company’s first achievers of the City & Guilds Nuclear Decommissioning NVQ Level 2.

Berkeley Site supports Stroud High School achieve BA Silver Crest Award

Year 10 pupils from Stroud High School are celebrating this week after receiving the prestigious BA Silver Crest Award, which is given for outstanding achievements in Science, Engineering and Maths.  The pupils were set a real life engineering project by Berkeley Nuclear Licensed Site, who have been working with the students for the past 8 months.  Berkeley Site Engineer, Ruth March and Physics Teacher, Iain Green led the project and provided the students with expert advice as well as arranging for a group of the students to visit the Berkeley Site.

Cleaning day success

With safety and compliance top of the agenda at Berkeley Site, a third housekeeping day was held on site in July. Staff, agency and contractors were put into hard hitting taskforce teams and sent out with one mission to de-clutter, clean and raise the overall standard of housekeeping across of the site. The clean up mission continued well into the afternoon and again proved a real success in making a recognisable improvement in appearance of work areas across the whole site. Site Director, Jim Crocker said: “yet again this has proved a valuable task to undertake. Safety and compliance are our top priorities and good housekeeping is a key way to ensure both of these are met. Thank you again to all those who took part and helped make a real improvement on site.”

Bradwell Site has confirmed that it has become a chosen spot for a pair of nesting peregrine falcons which have been observed on the top of the Reactor 1 roof (the reactor nearest to the river).

Bradwell receives RoSPA gold medal

Bradwell Site is a confirmed winner of one of the prestigious Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) Occupational Health and Safety Awards this year. The site has received the RoSPA gold award for eight consecutive years which qualifies the site to receive its 4th Gold Medal for sustained achievement.

Vale Vision gets smart

Vale Vision Development Trust in Dursley have gone all SMART thanks to a donation from Berkeley Nuclear Licensed Site.  As part of the Berkeley Site's socio-economic development activities it has donated a new £2500 SMART white board to the trust's shop in Dursley.   The new board is interactive and can therefore be used in conjunction with the trusts IT equipment.  This will allow the delivery of training and development packages to the local community and to those currently unemployed, seeking new skills to aid them with future employment.

Magnox South joined forces with over 175 nuclear employers to support Skills Minister David Lammy and Energy Minister Malcolm Wicks in January as they marked the official launch of the National Skills Academy for Nuclear (NSAN).

Dungeness A has been successful in its bid to be re-accredited with three International Standards (ISO) for safety, quality and the environment. The achievement followed an inspection by auditors who complimented the site on the integration of safety, quality and environmental factors with all activities at the plant.

Lights Out

The lights in the Reactor Boiler House Buildings at Bradwell were switched off on 10 February 2008 marking the end of an era for the skyline around the local area. Following the end of generation and completion of defuelling, the decision was made to switch off the lights to help reduce the site’s energy consumption.

Bradwell support local farming community

The site has engaged with Maldon District Council’s drive to create better links between rural farmers and the local authorities. Barny Richardson is the Council’s Rural Business Advisor, who supports the farming and rural business community by helping them with planning, business development, pre-planning application meetings, relocation of businesses, liaison with planning officers and the reuse of farm buildings.
